The brand’s annual trend research shows how everyday celebrations, entertainment-fueled outings and the pursuit of worthwhile experiences are reshaping dining, led by younger generations
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Americans aren’t waiting for big milestones to make a dinner reservation. From celebrating everyday moments to turning a concert into a full night out, diners are finding more reasons to make moments feel special. Today, OpenTable, a global leader in restaurant tech, unveils its 2027 Dining Trends Report, revealing how the definition of a dining occasion is expanding as Americans seek experiences that make their time and money feel well spent.
And they’re making room for more of them. Dining on OpenTable increased 11% year-over-year in 2026,¹ while 76% of Americans expect to spend the same or more on dining out in 2027 and 68% expect to visit restaurants the same or more often.² Younger generations are especially eager to invest in dining out, with 58% of Gen Z expecting to increase their spending in 2027, compared with 44% of Americans overall.²
The shift goes beyond younger generations. Dining increases across travelers, solo diners and groups, alongside a growing appetite for experiences beyond traditional celebrations are reshaping how Americans will dine out in 2027: 35% expect to celebrate smaller, everyday moments with a restaurant meal more frequently, while 40% expect entertainment or live events to lead them to dine out more often.² At the same time, diners are redefining what makes a restaurant experience truly valuable, whether that’s getting more for their money, enjoying a date night out or finding a favorite spot where they feel like a regular.
“Dining out has always been about more than what’s on the plate, but we’re seeing Americans find new reasons to make it part of their everyday lives,” said Amy Wei, Chief Operating Officer at OpenTable. “Whether it’s celebrating a small win, making a night of a concert or becoming a regular at a neighborhood favorite, diners want experiences that feel worth it. For restaurants, that creates more opportunities to turn everyday moments into meaningful connections with guests.”
How America Will Dine in 2027
From finding more reasons to celebrate to making the most of a night out, Americans are rethinking what makes a restaurant experience rewarding. Four trends reveal how diners are turning everyday moments into occasions and finding more reasons to return.
Small wins deserve a reservation: With ‘treating yourself’ or ‘sweet treats’ gaining traction in the cultural zeitgeist, a new trend has emerged: turning everyday moments into celebrations we’re calling “micro-occasions.” More than a third of Americans (35%) expect to celebrate smaller or everyday moments with a restaurant meal more often in 2027, rising to 56% of Gen Z.² Those micro-occasions are already taking shape: in the past year, 26% of Gen Z and Millennials have celebrated payday with a restaurant meal, while 20% of Americans have dined out after receiving good news.² A personal victory or a little extra in the bank can be enough to get dinner on the calendar.
The occasion sets the budget: Diners are weighing where to save and when to splurge. Given the same budget, 34% of Americans would choose a more affordable restaurant where they could order more food and drinks, compared with 18% who would choose a more expensive restaurant and order fewer items. Another 26% say it depends on the occasion.² Whether the plan is an impromptu treat or a carefully chosen experience, value means finding a meal that fits the moment.
Eater-tainment puts dinner on the itinerary: From pre-show meals to post-game gatherings, restaurants help make an outing a night out. In the past year, 83% of Gen Z have paired a restaurant meal with an entertainment, cultural or community outing.² Looking ahead, 40% of Americans expect entertainment or live events to lead them to dine out more often in 2027.² Restaurants are also supplying attractions of their own: dining through OpenTable Experiences in 2026 increased 51% year-over-year,¹ spanning opportunities to make the meal itself an event.
The newest restaurant flex? Becoming a regular: Alongside special outings, younger diners want places they can make their own. Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z (64%) and 57% of Millennials will try to establish themselves as a restaurant regular in 2027.² Convenience, consistency, better service or a better table, and perks are among the motivations.² For restaurants, an everyday celebration or pre-show dinner can be the first introduction to a lasting relationship.
