PHY Wireless, a pioneer in edge-based cellular positioning technology for massive IoT and next-generation 5G SA & 6G wireless networks, today announced a collaboration with Surfact, a provider of intelligent tracking solutions for perishable goods logistics, to improve tracking frequency, extend battery life and enhance visibility across cold-chain and food transportation operations.

GPS-based systems can consume significant power and can perform inconsistently in containers, warehouses and other challenging logistics environments where satellite signals are blocked or degraded. Cellular signals are specifically engineered to provide reliable coverage deep inside buildings, shipping containers, and other hard-to-reach locations. PHY Wireless’s edge-based cellular positioning technology leverages these existing network signals to calculate location directly on the device, delivering accurate positioning with significantly lower power consumption while supporting more frequent location updates and longer battery life.

Surfact develops ruggedized tracking devices that monitor the location, condition, and integrity of temperature-sensitive goods throughout the supply chain. As demand grows for greater visibility into perishable shipments, logistics providers are increasingly challenged to deliver more frequent location updates without sacrificing battery life or increasing operational complexity.

“Surfact is addressing some of the most demanding challenges in cold-chain logistics,” said Tom Horgan, CEO of PHY Wireless. “Unlike traditional GPS and cloud-based location systems, PHY Wireless enables devices to calculate location directly at the edge, reducing power consumption while supporting more frequent location updates, longer battery life and lower operating costs. Together, we are demonstrating how edge-based positioning can deliver measurable value for logistics operators managing large fleets of connected assets.”

Founded by logistics professionals with deep experience managing complex food supply chains, including large-scale military and humanitarian logistics operations, Surfact is expanding its intelligent tracking platform across Europe and North America to help customers improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, and strengthen supply chain visibility.

For Surfact, one of the most compelling opportunities is the ability to significantly increase location update frequency without compromising battery life. More frequent updates can improve shipment visibility, accelerate exception management, and provide better operational insight throughout the supply chain while reducing maintenance requirements associated with battery replacement.

“Our customers need better visibility into the movement and condition of perishable goods without increasing operational complexity,” said Per Magne Helseth, CEO and founder of Surfact. “PHY Wireless’s edge-based positioning technology offers an innovative approach that will help us deliver more frequent location updates, extend battery life, and improve the overall economics of large-scale logistics tracking.”

The collaboration will also support Surfact’s efforts to expand its intelligent logistics platform into North America, where the company is exploring new deployment opportunities for cold-chain and perishable goods tracking applications.
